Remember all children develop at their own speed and this information is only a guideline.

12 - 18 months

  • Walk alone (if not walking by 18 months talk to your HV /GP
  • Starting to feed themselves (very messy, be prepared)
  • Begins to build with bricks (start with large ones)
  • Understands lots and can say between 6 -20 words by 18 months
  • Starting to use pretend play - feeding teddy, talking on the phone

18 – 24 months

  • Enjoys scribbling with crayons (watch your walls!)
  • Learns to kick and throw a ball
  • Starting to put at least 2 words together
  • Pointing to parts of their body

2 – 3 1/2 years

  • It is normal for a 2 year old to pronounce words incorrectly.  Some 3 year olds may also be difficult to understand.  Talk to your HV if concerned.
  • Repeats rhymes and songs and talks clearly
  • Can be understood by strangers
  • By 3-3 1/2  should be talking in sentences
