Top Ten Toddler Tips
Toddlers feel secure when they
have good routines, where
possible keep to regular meal
times, playtimes and bedtimes.
Be consistent when setting
boundaries, they will only get
confused if one day they are
allowed to do something and the
next day they are not!
Give only one clear command at a
time, be at the toddlers level and
nearby. Wait for a response and
be prepared to repeat requests!
Avoid always saying no to
toddlers. Giving alternatives and
stressing what you want them to
do rather than what you do not
want them to do reduces conflict.
Ignore unwanted behaviour
and pay attention to positive
behaviour. Toddlers are often very
easy to divert and distract.
It is common for toddlers to bite, hit and throw. Keep calm and use a firm tone of voice to show disapproval of unacceptable behaviour.

It is very important to reward your toddler when they are
behaving well. Give lots of
attention at these times rather than
rushing off to do the washing!
Listen to what your toddler is
telling you even when they don’t have the words. It can help to repeat back to them what you guess they are feeling.
A positive parent knows it is OK to ask for help when the going gets tough. Remember there is no such thing as a perfect parent or a perfect child.
Parents have needs, take regular time out and take care of yourself!
