The Primary Health Care Team

During your pregnancy you’ll be looked after by members of the primary health care team.

This team includes:

GP

Your family doctor, along with a midwife, will help to plan your antenatal care. The GP will provide medical care for both you and your baby during and after pregnancy.

Midwives

Hospital and community midwives - provide care for mothers and babies through pregnancy, labour and birth.

Community midwives - continue to care for you and your baby for between 10 and 28 days after the birth.

Health Visitor

Your health visitor takes over the care of both you and your baby from the midwife. All health visitors are qualified nurses who have received further training to support new mothers, babies and other family members. The service they offer includes:

  • Child Health Clinics
  • developmental reviews
  • support with feeding, sleeping and behaviour issues
  • local information
  • support to mothers who are feeling anxious or low.

If you have any concerns about yourself, baby or other family members then speak to your health visitor.
