Early Years Foundation Stage

By September 2008 all childcare providers caring for children aged 0 to 5 years must of implemented the EYFS into their settings educational plans. This means that all childcare settings will be following the same set of principles.

The main points of the EYFS are-

  • Raising quality and reducing inequality
  • Meeting the individual needs of all children
  • Principled approach
  • Play based approach
  • Incorporates National Standards
  • Consistent approach to care, learning and development
  • Unique child
  • All children and families are important- Parents as partners!!

The EYFS is based on 4 themes and principles-

  • A Unique Child
  • Positive Relationships
  • Enabling Environments
  • Learning and Development

The principles apply to all children under 5 years old. Each Principle is supported by commitments. These commitments describe how the principles can be implemented into early years settings, giving advice and ideas to early years practitioners.

Children learn and develop best through play. So practitioners will plan appropriate stimulating activities that cover the commitments. These activities will be observed so practitioner can record the children’s development and areas they need to work on. Parents must remember that every child progresses at a different rate.

Working with Parents

The EYFS is based on the principle of Inclusion. Which means that all Early Years Providers opposes discrimination and prejudice. Encouraging Equality and Diversity, welcoming all families and children.

Throughout The EYFS it stresses the importance of parents as partners and encourages practitioners, parents and carers to work together in partnership to help children learn and develop to their full potential.

It is also important to understand that each child and their families are unique with different needs.
